Orbital Sunrise Batiks Ochre
Gold and tan abstract shapes. Dr. Karen Nyberg is an engineer, astronaut and artist who has had an awe-inspiring nearly thirty years of experience in human spaceflight. Her trips to the International Space Station in 2008 and 2013 totaled 180 days in space. Dr. Nyberg, alongside NASA, invited crafters from around the world to join in creating a global community quilt, using 9" star-themed blocks. One was sewn in space by Dr. Nyberg and over 2,400 others were made by sky-searching sewists and crafters all over the world. These blocks were made into 28 king-sized quilts and represent a truly interconnected world. Her fabric collection, Orbital Sunrise, is named after the phenomenon of a sunrise seen from space where the curvature of the earth is visible. She says "(watching a sunrise from the ISS) is one of the most beautiful and moving things I've ever experienced. It starts as a very thin layer of white and blue illuminating the horizon against a pitch-black background. Then it starts to glow with reds and oranges, as it illuminates the space station a rich gold color. As the sun continues to rise, a very defined terminator moves across the earth, revealing the vibrant colors of our planet. The beauty of the moment always awed me, so I loved the idea of naming a line of fabrics after something so beautiful."
